Los Alamitos which
means "The Little Cottonwoods" in Spanish is a
small city in Orange County, California, United States. The city was
incorporated on March 1, 1960, the township of Los Alamitos then
became a chartered city of Orange County, California and as of the
2000 census the population of the city was 11,536. The clusters of
cottonwood trees Spanish explorers saw more than 200 years ago
inspired Los Alamitos' name.Come join the friendly city and enjoy
it wonderful perks.
The
history of the Rancho Los Alamitos is almost a microcosm for the history
of westward expansion in the United States. Situated in the flood plain
between the mouths of the ever-shifting Los Angeles, San Gabriel and
Santa Ana Rivers, the terrain of the rancho is virtually flat, and
was subject to frequent flooding. The rancho building itself is located
near springs alongside on one of the few small hills in the area.It
was also the site of a major Native American Gabrielino (or Tongva)
community.The first school in city
was built in 1881 at what is now
Katella and Los Alamitos Boulevard. Most of the workers who worked
in the fields then were Mexican, but many immigrants from Belgium,
France and Germany also came here to work and establish their own farms
and businesses.
All in all, the city of Little Cottonwoods is best described as "A
Little Jewel of a City." Its city seal reflects its ancestry, its
official flower, the Daisy, reflects its youth, since it was named by
a young boy who nominated the bloom because it was his mother’s
favorite flower.
