The City of Orange is located in Orange County, California. It is
approximately three miles (six kilometers) north of the County seat
in Santa Ana, California, and approximately thirty two miles (fifty
two kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles. Orange's origins are rich
with legends. One of the most popular tales asserts that the city was
named during a game of poker. Although the City of Orange was incorporated in 1888, it actually
datesback to 1869 when Alfred Chapmanand
Andrew Glassell,both
lawyers, accepted one thousand three hundred and eighty five acres of
land from the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana as legal fees. The two men
then laid out a one square mile town with ten-acre farm lots
surrounding a forty acre central town site. The center of the town
site became known as the Plaza, now the community symbol.
The small town was developed around a central Plaza in the form of a
traffic circle or ("roundabout") which remains to this day, and
was incorporated on April 6, 1888 under the general laws of the State of
California. That Orange was the only city in Orange County to be
planned and built around a Plaza earned it the nickname "Plaza City”. Originally the community was named Richland, but the town’s
application for a post office was denied in 1873 due to the fact that
there was already a Richland in Sacramento County. According to
California from the Conquistadores to the Legends of Laguna by Roeger
W. Jones, Alfred Chapman (who wanted the name "Lemon"), Andrew
Glassell (who favored "Orange"), and two other gentlemen (who pressed
for "Olive" and "Walnut") played a hand of poker and whoever won the
game would get to rename the town. Glassell, whose birthplace was
Orange County, Virginia won the game, and in January of 1875 Richland
was, renamed Orange.
Today, Orange has been expanding its population and its boundaries.
Bordered by unincorporated land to the east, the city has been
growing by bits and pieces every year. Now is your chance to become
one of the members of Orange.
