San Juan Capistrano which is sometimes nicknamed Capo for short, is a
city located in southern Orange County, California, USA, located
approximately 23 miles southeast of Downtown Santa Ana. The current
OMB metropolitan designation for San Juan Capistrano and the Orange
County Area is “Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, CA.” The population was
33,826 at the 2000 census.The city was created around Mission San Juan Capistrano,and many of
the homes and
strip malls resemble the Spanish architecture that
composes the building. San Juan Capistrano is the site of a Catholic
mission for which it is named, Mission San Juan Capistrano. When the
Mission was founded in 1776, the region was populated by the
Acjachemen band of Indians, called Juanenos by the Spanish
Residents voted 358 to Residents voted 358 to 88 to incorporate as a city in April 1961. At
the time, the city had 1,287 residents, according to city records.
Today, the population is well over 34,000. The city of San Juan Capistrano is located
in the center of Southern
California, midway between Los Angeles and San Diego and all of
Southern California's major attractions. Situated in the lush
Capistrano Valley and minutes from the Pacific Ocean, San Juan
Capistrano is a cultural center, filled with Historic sites. San Juan
Capistrano is home of the Swallows of Capistrano, who have returned
to the Mission San Juan Capistrano for centuries to nest and have
their young in the valley.
